A stump left in the yard does more than look untidy. It can send up new shoots, get in the way of a mower and stop you planting where you want. We grind stumps, remove trees and clear lots for homeowners in Lincoln, and we will tell you plainly what your stump needs.

Stumps and trees in Lincoln

Lincoln has a wide mix of properties, and that shapes the work we do there. Near the older part of town there are established lots with mature trees. Their roots have had years to spread under driveways, walkways and lawns, so a stump there often comes with surface roots that need attention too. In the newer subdivisions, many yards were planted with fast-growing street and shade trees when the homes were built. Some of those trees have now grown too big for a narrow side yard or a planter strip, or have started lifting concrete. Out toward the edges of town and on rural parcels nearby, the jobs tend to be larger: native oaks, old fence lines, brush and the stumps left after past clearing.

The climate matters as well. Summers here are long, hot and dry, and winters bring most of the year's rain. Much of the ground is heavy clay. In summer it bakes hard, and in winter it turns soft and sticky. We can grind stumps in any season, but after heavy rain we take more care getting equipment across a lawn so we do not leave ruts. On a dry summer day the same lawn takes the weight with no trouble.

Why a stump is worth dealing with

Many people leave a stump after a tree comes down and plan to deal with it later. That is fine for a while, but a few things tend to happen. Some species, including many common yard trees, send up suckers from the stump and roots, so you end up trimming a small thicket every spring. A decaying stump can draw termites, carpenter ants and fungus, and while that does not always spread to the house, it is not something you want close to a wood fence or deck. A low stump hidden in grass is easy to trip over or hit with a mower blade. And if you want to lay a new lawn, build a patio or put in a garden bed, the stump is simply in the way.

If a stump has been sitting for years and is soft and crumbling, grinding usually goes quickly. If it is fresh and hard, especially oak, it takes longer, but the result is the same: the stump is gone below the surface and the area can be filled and used again.

Services we offer in Lincoln

Stump Grinding is the most common request. We grind the stump below ground level, leaving a bed of wood chips you can keep as mulch or have us rake into a pile. Stump Removal goes further and takes out the root ball, which makes sense when you plan to build or pour concrete in that exact spot. Root Grinding deals with surface roots that run across a lawn or have started pushing up a path.

We also handle the trees themselves. Tree Removal is for trees that are dead, leaning toward the house or simply in the wrong place. Tree Trimming covers raising a canopy off a roof, clearing branches from a fence line and cutting back dead wood. Lot Clearing suits larger parcels with brush, small trees and several stumps. Oak Stump Removal gets its own mention because oak is dense and slow to grind, and the stumps are often large. Before removing a living oak, it is worth checking with the city or county about whether a permit is needed, and we can talk that through with you. Storm Cleanup covers fallen limbs and trees after winter wind and rain, during our regular hours.

Grind or remove: how to decide

For most yards, grinding is the right choice. It costs less effort, disturbs less of the surrounding ground and lets you replant grass or shrubs in the same area once the chips are cleared and topsoil is added. The roots left underground slowly break down on their own.

Full removal is worth it when something will go directly on top of the stump: a slab, a shed footing, a pool or a wall. In those cases leftover roots can rot and leave the ground uneven later. It is also worth considering when a stump sits right against a foundation or sidewalk and the roots are part of the problem. We will look at the spot and tell you which approach fits what you plan to do with it.

What a visit looks like

When we come out, we start by walking the site with you. We look at the stump size, the species if we can tell, how close it is to fences, walls and the house, and how we will get the grinder in. Gate width matters, so it helps to know whether your side gate is narrow or the backyard is only reachable through the garage. We ask about sprinkler lines, lighting cables and anything else buried nearby. For utility lines, calling 811 before digging is always a good idea.

On the day of the work, we set up, grind the stump to the agreed depth and clean up the area. You decide what happens to the chips: leave them in the hole, spread them as mulch or pile them for removal. If roots need grinding, we follow them out as far as we agreed. Before we leave, we walk the spot with you again.
