Loomis yards tend to be big, and many hold old orchard trees and native oaks. When a tree comes down, the stump usually stays put until it gets in the way of a mower, a fence line or a building plan. We grind stumps and roots out of the way so you can use that ground again.

What we see on Loomis properties

Loomis is mostly larger lots: older ranch homes, horse properties and newer houses tucked in between. Many yards still have trees left from the orchard days, along with native oaks that were here long before the houses. When one of those trees comes down, the stump usually stays behind. On a big lot it is easy to mow around a stump for years before it becomes a problem.

The ground matters here. Much of the town sits on decomposed granite with boulders close to the surface. That helps drainage, but it is hard on grinder teeth, so we probe around a stump before we start and slow down when we reach rock. Clay pockets in low spots stay wet through the winter. Stumps sitting in that wet ground tend to rot from the inside, and rotting wood attracts termites and carpenter ants.

Summers are long, hot and dry. A dead stump surrounded by dry grass is fuel, and on acreage near open land it is worth dealing with before fire season. Winter storms bring the other common job. After a few days of rain and wind, a pine or oak can split or come out by the roots, leaving the root plate standing up out of a pasture or a lawn.

Services we offer in Loomis

Stump Grinding is the job most people call about. We grind the stump below the surface so you can plant grass, lay sod or set a paver patio over the spot. Stump Removal goes further and pulls the stump and its main root ball out of the ground. That makes sense when a foundation or footing is going in where the stump stands.

Root Grinding takes care of surface roots that run across a lawn, lift a walkway or catch the mower blade. Oak Stump Removal is listed separately because oak is dense, its roots spread wide, and many oaks in Loomis are native trees that the town may protect. If the oak is still standing, ask the town whether you need a permit before anyone cuts it.

We also handle work above the ground. Tree Removal takes down a dead or leaning tree in sections when it stands close to a house, a fence or a barn. Tree Trimming clears limbs off a roof, away from a driveway or back from the service drop to your house. Lines on the utility side are the power company's job. Lot Clearing removes brush, small trees and old stumps from a parcel before you build or fence it, or just to make a back acre usable again. Storm Cleanup deals with the limbs and trunks a winter storm leaves behind. We book it during our regular hours because we do not offer after-hours service.

Grind it or pull it out

For most yards, grinding is the right choice. It is quicker, it leaves the soil around the stump mostly undisturbed, and you can rake the chips back into the hole or spread them as mulch. The wood left below the grind slowly rots away and causes no trouble under a lawn.

Full removal is worth the extra work if something solid is going on top, like a slab, a shed pad or a pool, or if you need to dig a trench through that spot. It leaves a bigger hole that needs fill soil and time to settle. If you are not sure which one you need, tell us what you plan to do with the spot and we will tell you which fits.

What a visit looks like

We start by looking at the stump, the access and what might be underground. Before we grind, we ask you to call 811 so the utility locators can mark buried gas, power and water lines. On rural lots we also ask about irrigation lines, septic tanks and leach fields, because the locators do not mark those.

The grinder needs a clear path into the yard, so gate width matters. If you can, measure your narrowest gate before we come out. We cover or block nearby windows, cars and siding to keep chips off them. Then we grind the stump below the surface, along with the larger roots close to it. Rock in decomposed granite slows the work down, and if we hit a boulder we cannot get past, we will tell you.

When we finish, we fill the hole with a mix of chips and soil. You can keep the chips as mulch or ask us to haul them away. Chips settle as they break down, so plan to top the spot up with soil after a few months, before you seed it.

How to book in Loomis

Call us at (916) 010-0003 or email info@stumpgrindingroseville.com. We work out of Roseville, a short drive from Loomis. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed on Sunday.

Photos help. Put something next to the stump for scale, like a shovel or a boot, and add a rough measurement across the top and the width of your narrowest gate. Tell us how many stumps there are and whether any of them are oak. With that, we can give you a stump quote and a time to come out.
